THAT morning marked a change in everything. Cham had left a plate of food for me on the table. Flin and Pac would have left for the market by now. I took the bread and cheese from the plate and wandered outside, where I found Cham in the yard next to the greenhouse, humming to himself and Macey. The dog lounged in the nearby shade. She rose and came to me the moment she saw me, and Cham looked up.
“Good morning, Ari.” His gray eyes glittered, his gaze sharp and direct. “Sleep well?”
I nodded, focusing my attention on the particular spot behind Macey’s right ear that gave her the most pleasure. There were so many things I wanted to say to him, to ask. So many things I wanted him to know.
“Good.” He patted my shoulder. “Come with me. There’s something I want to show you.”
He led me inside the greenhouse, and I was surprised how cool it was; a definite contrast to the warmth of midmorning outside. The sun didn’t reach directly in the south-facing windows at this time of day, this late in the year, and the vents were open. It was a peaceful haven, with most of the benches covered in evidence that Cham wasn’t the only one who spent time working on various projects where they would be safe from the sun and heat.
“I wanted you to see,” he said, guiding me to the bench behind the door. “Because you planted this seed, and you saw it fall.”
I remembered the day Pac had entered the greenhouse and overturned a pot, and Cham nodded. “You thought you had lost one of your creations, but do you see how it has clung to life, even thrived under circumstances that should have killed it?” He pointed, and I realized the lone plant on the ground next to the bench wasn’t actually in a pot, but was growing up next to the bench itself, its roots spread in the thin soil under the gravel of the floor.
“There’s not enough earth,” I said, kneeling to see how it was possible that such a thing could be real.
“There is just enough, I suppose,” Cham said, crouching next to me.
“But it can’t survive.” I touched a leaf, and the plant trembled. A bloom dangled from one thin branch, and even as I watched, delicate petals of pink, purple and white emerged, as though waiting for my touch, my call, to come forth. I drew my hand back in a rush, collapsing back onto the ground.
Cham laughed, and the delight on his face was like spring all over again.
I smiled.
“That’s not possible.” I pointed to the plant, but there it was, proof that what should be impossible could not be denied. A pure, perfect bloom, the multicolored miracle of a bleeding heart flower, dangled from the plant.
“When a thing is nurtured, it grows, Ari. Blooms, and becomes what it was always meant to be.” He stood and reached a hand out toward me.
I took the offer and he pulled me up.
